John is a senior construction and infrastructure lawyer, with over 20 years’ experience advising clients on construction and infrastructure projects. He has particular expertise in infrastructure agreements including engineering procurement and construction, design and construct, operation and maintenance and facilities management contracts and development agreements. He drafts and negotiates all manner of construction and construction related agreements including EPC, D&C, ECI, O&M, facilities management, development agreements, consultancy agreements.
What he does
John advises clients involved in infrastructure projects, building developments, and major equipment procurement. He has significant experience in advising clients on risk allocation, project structuring, market positions on material risk issues at every level of the market and works hard for his clients to ensure deals are completed on the best terms and conditions.

John works with energy companies, facilities management companies, infrastructure contractors, health care providers, universities, developers, government agencies and building and engineering contractors.
Qualifications
John has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bowdoin College, a Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law and a Masters of Laws degree from Kings College University of London. John has been recognised by Best Lawyers as being one of the best lawyers in Construction and Real Estate each year since 2013.
Life before Sparkes
John began his legal career in California as a sole practitioner, before moving to Taipei, Taiwan, where he spent three years as a foreign licenced lawyer, including almost 2 years at Baker & McKenzie. John moved to Australia in 2000, and spent 5 years in Allens’ Energy, Resources and Infrastructure group, 5 years in Freehills’ Banking and Projects team, 8 years as a partner in Gadens’ Construction and Development Team and 2.5 years as a partner in HWL Ebsworth Lawyers’ Construction and Infrastructure team.
Life outside of Sparkes
John enjoys spending time with his family, especially his two teenaged sons, cooking, watching zombie movies with his youngest son, reading crime novels and walking his two dogs.
