Maxine assists various government agencies and public sector clients with workplace risks, incidents and disputes. Working across our Government, Workplace and Statutory Lines practice groups, she leads our State Compensation team in Canberra.

What she does
Maxine specialises in work health and safety (WHS) matters, workplace culture and behaviour, incident management and response, whistleblowing, investigations, human rights and discrimination, workplace protection orders, common law and statutory work injury claims. She advises on litigated and non-litigated matters, investigations and inquiries, regulatory compliance and audit, risk management and merits review.
With extensive advocacy and dispute resolution experience, Maxine has appeared in various state and territory courts and tribunals.
Maxine is well recognised for her professional excellence and is frequently called upon to present at industry and client seminars and events. She has recently been acknowledged as a leading Government and Insurance lawyer in Best Lawyers in Australia 2023.
Who she works with
Maxine works with public and private sector organisational clients. Passionate about creating a healthy workplace culture, Maxine understands all aspects of safety within the work environment. Her drive and knowledge see her regularly advising senior executives, in-house legal teams, and internal safety, claims and fraud teams across a range of industries – including defence, transport, construction, parliamentary, disability, aged care, environment, finance and insurance, and hospitality.
Maxine brings valuable insights to her clients, having undertaken several in-house secondments working directly with legal and operational line areas.
Qualifications
Maxine has a Master of Laws and Bachelors of Asian Studies and Law from the Australian National University. She holds a Lead Auditor qualification in WHS Management Systems, and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
Life before Sparkes
Before finishing law school, Maxine worked summer holidays as an industrial equities analyst in Sydney. She has previously worked at a new-law model firm, as well as a national Australian and international law firm.
Life outside of Sparkes
Maxine is good at, but prefers not to, cull oysters on the family farm.
