About Bill

Bill is an experienced work health and safety (WHS) lawyer. He advises clients in the construction, agribusiness and transport industries as well as Commonwealth, state and local government sectors on WHS compliance, incident investigations, prosecutions and coronial inquests. Bill also advises owners corporations and builders on building defect and fire safety claims, and strata issues. He has acted in all jurisdictions in proceedings for building defect disputes.

What he does

Bill's experience working in a range of industries allows him to quickly identify workplace issues and assist his clients to comply with their WHS obligations. He advises his clients on WHS policies and procedures and provides training on WHS obligations, due diligence and incident management. Bill advises on investigations by the regulator, acts in prosecution proceedings brought by the regulator and coronial inquests.

Bill has extensive experience advising and representing owners corporations on the home building and strata schemes legislation, and advises on building defects, fire safety, WHS and contractual disputes.

He is the Health and Safety Officer for the Environment, Health and Safety Law Committee of the International Bar Association.

Qualifications

Bill has a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws degree from Macquarie University.


Life before Sparkes

Bill served as a local Government Councillor from 2004 to 2012 and as Deputy Mayor between 2010 and 2012. He was instrumental in establishing a partnership between the Council and Salvos Legal to enable community legal services for disadvantaged people in the local area. Bill previously worked with Norton Rose Fulbright, where he was a partner, before joining Sparke Helmore in July 2011.


Life outside of Sparkes

Bill enjoys playing competition squash and has a keen interest in the arts and film industry. He is also involved in a number of community safety and charitable organisations, and is a Director of the Hellenic Club Sydney.
