Steve has over 15 years’ experience in employment and safety law and regularly advises clients on a wide range of employment issues, claims and disputes, as well as assisting clients with the ever-changing requirements under workplace health and safety legislation.
What he does
Steve advises on issues including interpretation of industrial instruments, redundancies, misconduct issues, workplace investigations as well as reviewing and drafting employment contracts and policies.
Steve represents clients on a regular basis in mediation and conciliation conferences in the Fair Work Commission, Federal Family and Circuit Court of Australia and other forums in relation to unfair dismissal, general protections, workplace bullying and discrimination claims.
Steve also plays a significant role in assisting clients in investigations related to workplace safety incidents, including workplace fatalities, and acted for clients in prosecutions resulting from those incidents.
Who he works with
Steve works with clients across a number of different industries including mining and resources, retail, engineering, technology and healthcare.
Qualifications
Steve has a Bachelor Laws with Honours from the University of Western Australia (UWA), as well as a Diploma of Education and Bachelor of Arts with Honours (majoring in English), also from UWA.
Life before Sparkes
Prior to becoming a lawyer, Steve was a High School English teacher for 13 years. Since commencing his legal career in 2008, he has worked for a number of prominent firms.
Life outside of Sparkes
Outside of work, Steve enjoys socialising with friends, discovering good restaurants, seeing movies and travelling to southwest WA when the opportunity arises. He is also always on the lookout for the next cool streaming series to watch with his teenage daughter.
