Richard Chew

Richard assists his clients with commercial transactions, outsourcing, IT and commercial telecommunications arrangements, technology and IP commercialisation, strategic procurement and sourcing, vendor management and negotiated company and business mergers and acquisitions across a range of industries. Richard also works with clients on commercial transactions in the Asia Pacific region, including China, Thailand and India.

Richard was recommended in The Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2018 and 2015 directory, noted for his "ability to understand IT concepts and translate them readily into layman's terms".

He was also recommended in the 2017 Doyle's Guide as a Leading Technology Lawyer and a Leading Telecommunications Lawyer in NSW.

Richard has a diverse range of clients, from small and medium enterprises to the largest ASX-listed companies. His clients operate in the food, liquor, retail, telecommunications and technology services industries.

Richard has been acknowledged as a leading Information Technology lawyer in AFR's Best Lawyers in 2019 & 2018.

Richard has a Bachelor of Science (Computer Science), a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, all from the Australian National University.

Before joining Sparke Helmore, Richard was a partner in the Intellectual Property & Technology group at an Australian national firm.  Before that, Richard was at King & Wood Mallesons for nine years.

Before entering legal practice, Richard spent over 10 years in the information technology industry where he managed operational technology teams across the Asia Pacific region, and provided software development, product and operational support for technology businesses.

Richard and his family love to travel, and enjoy good food and wine. He also tries to play the piano, so he can keep up with his daughter.
