Paul is an experienced insurance and liability lawyer who specialises in personal injury and property claims for private sector insurers and Government clients. His work has included claims for catastrophic physical injuries, significant nervous shock, product recalls and property damage. Paul has conducted litigation in NSW, the ACT, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia.
What he does
Paul advises and acts for insurers and corporate clients in litigated and un litigated general liability and institutional abuse claims. Paul is focused on the best outcome for clients and thinks outside the box, including non-monetary outcomes (apologies, retraining and reintegration) to achieve favourable outcomes for clients. He provides advice on coverage, contribution and recovery from third parties and deals with complex liability and quantum claims.
Paul has advanced dispute resolution skills, having successfully negotiated compromised resolutions in many matters before they reached a substantive hearing.
His work often involves closely analysing medical and factual evidence, interviewing witnesses, and understanding complex legislative and policy issues. Paul provides strategic, analytical, and tailored advice to clients at each stage of the claims process.
Paul is pragmatic and easy to work with and uses his strong attention to detail to deliver great outcomes.
Who he works with
Paul has acted for Australian insurers, European insurers, and Lloyd’s Underwriters as well as State and Commonwealth Departments, Schools, various religious institutions.
Qualifications
Paul has a Diploma of Law (LPAB).
Life before Sparkes
Paul joined Sparkes in 2023 after working at a well-known Australian national defendant insurance firm as well as a boutique insurance firm in the Sydney CBD. Prior to admission as a lawyer Paul worked in the NSW District Court, and NSW Dust Diseases Tribunal as well as assisting on the Special Commission of Inquiry into James Hardie in 2004.
Life outside of Sparkes
On weekends, Paul can often be found catching up with friends and spending time with family. He enjoys working in the garden and considers himself an avid DIY’er. Paul is happy to discuss renovations and building at any time.
