Matt advises clients, principally in the insurance sector, on corporate transactions and business reorganisations, regulatory compliance, insurance and reinsurance, governance and risk management.
As a national board member of the Australian Insurance Lawyers Association (AILA), a member of the Victorian Committee of AILA and a committee member of the Victorian Reinsurance Discussion Group, Matt is an active leader within the insurance community.
What he does
With over 20 years’ experience in the insurance sector and having worked in both the Australian and London markets, he has extensive knowledge across the general and life insurance sectors and a deep understanding of all facets of the conduct of an insurance business including:
- Acquisitions and divestments of insurance and insurance intermediary businesses, including insurance business transfers (portfolio transfers)
- Complex reinsurance transactions, including LPT and ADC structures
- Insurance sector regulatory approval processes
He advises underwriters on the risks in M&A transactions and coverage under warranty and indemnity insurance.
Matt’s corporate practice is complimented by a strong focus on insurance and financial services regulation across product, conduct and prudential regulation. Matt assists clients to navigate the significant regulatory reform agenda in Australia including:
- Implementation and compliance with the Financial Accountability Regime (FAR)
- CPS230 (Operational risk management)
- AFSL licensing and compliance
- Breach investigation and reporting
- Prudential regulatory compliance (including material outsourcing, governance and remuneration)
- Response to regulatory investigations
Who he works with
Matt principally acts for insurers and insurance intermediaries.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Laws and Arts from Monash University. Master of Laws from University of Melbourne.

Matt has worked at two top tier law firms, including a stint in London, becoming a partner in 2017.
