About Mathew

Mathew has a depth of experience advising on a range of debt finance and debt capital markets transactions, including property and construction finance, project finance, asset finance, structured finance, leveraged and acquisition finance and corporate finance. He regularly advises on complex security arrangements and structuring issues, with particular expertise in Australian PPSA matters, intercreditor arrangements, domestic and cross-border syndicated financings, multi-jurisdictional financing considerations and security packages.

What he does

Mathew has finance experience in a wide range of industries, including energy and resources, infrastructure, oil and gas, information technology, student and disability housing, hospitality, residential and commercial real estate, aged care and health care, agriculture, logistics, manufacturing and financial services.

Who he works with

Mathew acts for domestic and international financiers, non-bank lenders, private equity sponsors, corporate trustees and corporate borrowers across a broad range of financing transactions.

Qualifications

Mathew has a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance & Accounting majors) and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of New South Wales.

Life before Sparkes

Before re-joining Sparke Helmore in 2025, Mathew worked for leading English law firm Clifford Chance. Earlier in his career, Mathew worked at Sparke Helmore as a graduate and associate.

Life outside of Sparkes

Outside of work, Mathew enjoys playing and following soccer and spending time exploring Sydney’s food and social scene. He values strong relationships with friends and family and enjoys travelling when he has the opportunity. Being of Greek heritage, Mathew has naturally accepted some of the following traits as his own: catering gatherings to comfortably feed more than the number of people invited, taking part in some louder than necessary discussions to debate absolutely anything as though it’s a parliamentary issue and dancing an evening away (maybe even over a broken plate or two).
