Lani is an experienced litigator, specialising in insurance law. She appears and instructs counsel in contentious matters across all jurisdictions from the Magistrate's Court to the Supreme and Federal Courts.
Lani is also a member of the Committee of the Australian Insurance Law (AILA) SA Chapter.
Lani provides comprehensive written advice on policy coverage, liability, quantum and defense strategy in claims made against professionals (including medical practitioners, allied health professionals, agents, valuers, lawyers, builders, engineers, architects and accountants). She also assists insurers in the investigation of suspected fraudulent claims and provides advice on prospects and strategy in subrogated recovery actions.
Lani has provided advice to insurers on indemnity and representation to insureds in the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety in answering notices to produce, preparing written statements and assisting witnesses attending the Royal Commission to give evidence.
Lani acts for Australian and overseas insurers, including Lloyds Syndicates, claims management agencies and self-insured organisations.
Lani holds a Masters in Laws from Melbourne University and completed her Bachelor of Laws (Honours) at the University of Adelaide. She also has a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Adelaide.
Before joining Sparkes, Lani worked for a boutique litigation firm in Adelaide providing professional indemnity advice and representation on instruction from legal and medical insurers.
When she's not spending time with friends and family (champagne in hand), Lani volunteers on the committees of Blind Sports SA and the Alliance Française d'Adélaïde (which also supports her passion for languages—she's currently learning French and Spanish).
