About Izzy

Izzy is a lawyer in the firm’s Pro Bono Practice with extensive experience advising Not-for-Profit organisations, social enterprises and registered charities on various corporate governance matters. Izzy develops long-term relationships, working with clients from the grass roots phase onwards and supports her clients through their journey to becoming highly functioning organisations, able to carry out their charitable purposes in the most effective ways possible.

What she does

Izzy’s broad practice ranges from advising on the legalities of starting a charity, including choosing an appropriate corporate structure and eligibility for charity registration and tax concessions, to advising on effectively governing a charitable entity, including compliance with ACNC and fundraising obligations.

Izzy’s legal assistance gives volunteer Board members the confidence that they have met their compliance obligations, allowing them to instead focus on building organisations capable of assisting people in need and addressing issues affecting our society.

Who she works with

Izzy works with charitable organisations of all shapes and sizes with varying charitable purposes, from small-scale community based organisations, to well known sophisticated charities. Her clients include organisations tackling food waste through education and food waste collection programs, public benevolent institutions assisting vulnerable people in need, charities working in the disability support sector, animal welfare charities and arts organisations.

Qualifications

Izzy has a Bachelor of Communications (majoring in Media Production), a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Diploma of Legal Practice from the University of Newcastle. She holds a practising certificate issued by the Law Society of New South Wales and is admitted to the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

Life before Sparkes

Prior to joining Sparke Helmore in 2018, Izzy worked as a graduate at the Department of Defence in the Capability, Acquisition and Sustainment Group, working across various areas within the organisation including a stint working for the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme.

Life outside of Sparkes

Izzy is a self-described serial hobbyist, and over the years has added roller skating, tap dancing and knitting to her growing list of hobbies. On the weekends, she can be found marrying couples across Newcastle and the Hunter Valley through her side-hustle as an Authorised Marriage Celebrant. She also volunteers her time on the Board of the Newcastle Fringe Festival, and in takes care of her adorable labradoodle Gino, who keeps her on her toes with his cheeky antics.
