Ian specialises in major and catastrophic motor vehicle insurance claims for major insurers. He advises on all aspects of motor vehicle disputes, including major/catastrophic claims, indemnity disputes, fraud and actions against third parties, including recovery actions between insurers.
What he does
Ian's main area of practice is representing and advising motor vehicle insurers in complex claim disputes. He has expertise in the assessment of damages and identifying strategies early for the effective management of major claims. He also has many years of experience appearing before the Supreme Court of the ACT, where he has successfully represented clients since 2005 in major and catastrophic claims.
Who he works with
Ian works with licenced CTP insurers in NSW, ACT and Qld. He has also represented those insurers in various disputes in other jurisdictions. Ian engages with insureds to foster stronger relationships with his clients and has built strong rapport with claimant lawyers in the CTP sphere.
Qualifications
Ian initially studied law with the legal practitioners admission board and then completed a Master of Laws at University of Technology Sydney.
Life before Sparkes
Before joining Sparke Helmore, Ian was a partner at Curwoods Lawyers. He has practised exclusively in insurance law for 20 years representing insurers in a variety of areas including dust diseases, workers compensation, property damage and CTP insurance.
Life outside of Sparkes
Ian is a sports fanatic—a keen golfer and skier, he also enjoys running and pilates. When he's not engaged in sporting activities, his time is occupied with family, particularly his three young boys.
