About Hamish

Hamish is an accomplished senior technology lawyer with more than 30 years’ experience advising clients on commercial issues and regulatory matters across the information technology and communication industries.

Hamish enjoys demystifying the complex interaction of technology and the law.

What he does

Hamish advises clients on commercial issues and regulatory matters across the information technology and communication industries.  He also advises clients in the rapidly changing privacy and cyber risk environment as well as on the issues associated with the digital business model, software, cloud, distribution, confidentiality, e-commerce, security, IT procurement and outsourcing.

Hamish has recently assisted both bricks and mortar and digital businesses work with regulators regarding allegations of breaches of the laws relating to spam, advertising and privacy.

In acting for one of Australia’s leading TV production companies, Hamish had occasion to have the Full Court of the Supreme Court of NSW favourably review a letter he’d written four years earlier.  Serving as a reminder to the old adage that everything you write could end up before a judge.

Who he works with

Hamish works with suppliers from the biggest global tech giants to start ups, to sell their digital services in a compliant fashion as well as assisting buyers of technology adapt, comply and do business in an increasingly digital world.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from the University of Queensland.

Life before Sparkes

Prior to joining Sparke Helmore, Hamish was the Lead Partner, IT & Communications, at Bird & Bird.  He also spent four years as a Corporate Counsel for a leading international telecommunications organisation. As an engineer, Hamish wrote computer code used in road design.

Life outside of Sparkes

Hamish is a keen cyclist and assures us he was racing bikes before it became fashionable.  He has commuted to work by bike for 35 years.  In addition to doing some yoga to undo all the cycling aches and pains, he is passionate about coffee.

With his science and engineering background, Hamish is convinced if he hadn’t become a lawyer he would have become a nuclear physicist, and can regularly be found reading non-fiction science texts.
