About Brad

Brad is a real “people person” who thrives on knowing that he is making a positive impact for his clients. It didn’t take Brad long to realise that the value a corporate and M&A lawyer brings to his clients reaches beyond legal answers: it is about connecting people, exceeding expectations from a service perspective and being able to offer an opinion steeped in more than 15 years of experience in commercial law firms in Australia, the United Kingdom and the Channel Islands (Jersey).

This is why Brad has been recommended in the Doyles Guide for leading commercial lawyers in Queensland on 2018 and 2019.

The Brisbane start-up ecosystem has consistently benefitted from Brad’s enthusiasm to help emerging start-ups and entrepreneurs navigate early stage capital raisings and legal issues. His commitment to start-ups sees him regularly give back at their events (as a participant and sponsor) as well as countless one-on-one mentoring sessions he has provided.

What he does

Brad’s sweet spot is all things capital raising, M&A and complex contract negotiations. With deal sizes ranging from $1 million to $125 million over the course of the last 15 years, Brad’s steady hand and ability to project manage stakeholders (often across the globe on a single deal) are invaluable assets to his clients.

Who he works with

Brad’s passion is working with start-ups and technology companies (from block chain projects to enterprise SaaS), however his client base spans a broader spectrum of industries including health, engineering and professional services, mining, and oil and gas, infrastructure, insurance, advertising, construction and manufacturing.

Qualifications

Brad holds a Bachelor of Law and Business (Banking and Finance) and he is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Directors.

Life before Sparkes

Brad’s career has brought him experience locally and internationally. He has practised in Australia, the UK and the Channel Islands (Jersey), working on matters that included recapitalising most major British banks during the Global Financial Crisis (to the tune of almost $50 billion), numerous ASX, TSX and NYSE listings, schemes of arrangement, countless mergers and acquisitions, investments from overseas venture capital funds, capital raisings for ASX listed entities by rights issue, placement and under regulated offer documents.

Brad joined Sparke Helmore in 2019, when he was a Partner with ClarkeKann Brisbane and the office amalgamated with Sparkes to bolster the Brisbane Corporate & Commercial offering.

Life outside of Sparkes

If it involves being outside (and preferably on the water with his wife and kids)—Brad’s all over it. His spare time is rarely spent being idle, which his wife tells him is exhausting at times! His other passions are yoga and pontificating with his mates over good bottles of wine.
