Alex is an experienced maritime and transport lawyer. She has considerable international experience, having worked on projects and cross-border litigation in Australia, Singapore, London, Sri Lanka and Myanmar.
Alex has acted on behalf of clients in the federal jurisdiction and most states across Australia, in both superior and lower courts.
What she does
Alex specialises in disputes related to charterparties, bills of lading, marine insurance and marine casualties. She also provides advice in relation to ship arrests and regulatory issues including pollution, licensing and safety.
Who she works with
Alex works with shipowners, charterers, P&I Clubs, freight forwarders, transport and logistics operators and across all levels of government.
Qualifications
Alex has a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business from the University of Newcastle.
Life before Sparkes
Alex started her career in commercial litigation at an international law firm. She then spent a number of years working at a global sector-focused law firm in the shipping team based in their Melbourne and Sydney offices.
Additionally, she has in-house experience, having held roles as a legal counsel at Australia’s largest private rail freight operator and as a claims executive at one of the largest P&I insurers in London.
Life outside of Sparkes
When not working, Alex can be found outdoors in the local national parks, at the beach, or cheering on from the sidelines at junior sport, with her three young boys, and husband, also called Alex.
