In a late change before the commencement of the Design and Building Practitioners Regulation 2021 (NSW) (DBP Regulation) on 1 July, the NSW Government has shortened the length of the insurance exemption for registered design practitioners, building practitioners and professional engineers from 24 months to 12 months.

The exemption, from the requirement to be adequately insured, now expires on 30 June 2022 rather than on 30 June 2023. This change is made by the Design and Building Practitioners Amendment (Miscellaneous) Regulation 2021 (NSW), which, along with the uncommenced provisions of the Design and Building Practitioners Act 2020 (NSW) (other than those relating to specialist work) and the DBP Regulation, will commence on 1 July 2021.

The new regime applies in relation to class 2 buildings and buildings containing a class 2 part.
