Your development

Wondering when you can stop competing?

Internal competition is detrimental to the development of our lawyers.

The key to growth is collaboration. Sparke Helmore's focus on collaboration within teams means individual heroics are discouraged and our lawyers are given the autonomy and scope to shine in their roles.

A trusting environment with less hierarchy and competition makes for a more relaxed environment where you can put your energy in to what you love most - engaging in legal issues and achieving great results for your clients.

Career planning and mentoring

Career planning is underpinned by the development plan contained in the Performance and Development Review process. In conjunction with our documented progression guidelines, these will form your career "map".

We encourage all lawyers to be open about their career objectives and to openly and regularly discuss them so we can support their goals.

In addition to the coaching you receive from your Partner, you will also have the opportunity to be mentored by a senior practitioner from another Practice Group giving you the benefit of:

  • Independent advice and support
  • Access to the network of a senior practitioner
  • Being able to focus on career and development issues

Learning and development

Our ongoing CLE curriculum includes:

  • Core modules compulsory for graduate and junior lawyers (up to 2 years post admission experience);
  • Legal technical modules on specific legal topics relevant to a variety of practice groups and levels
  • Client seminars including presentations from clients
  • Practice group and industry focussed seminars;
  • General business or commercial seminars of interest, including issues such as tendering, budget implications for business and current business topics such as triple bottom line reporting.

We also have a "soft skills" training curriculum, underpinning the competencies required for progression.

The following table found here is an outline of the learning and development curriculum that supports the management and leadership competency.
