Paul Calvert

What he does

Paul’s expertise covers pre-contract tender reviews, risk assessment, and guidance on project structures and contracting strategies.  He is skilled in drafting and negotiating early contractor involvement (ECI) agreements, head contracts, subcontracts, consultancy deeds, and supply procurement agreements, along with ancillary project documents such as adjoining owner agreements and project finance documentation.  Paul also advises on claims management during the construction phase and can provide guidance on the regulatory requirements of local, state and federal government bodies relevant to construction projects.

Paul has extensive project administration and management experience spanning residential, commercial, and industrial developments, as well as in the health, education, transport, and energy sectors.

Who he works with

Paul regularly acts for developers and principals, builders and developer-builders of all sizes, state and local government and government departments, suppliers, consultants and bank and non-bank lenders.

Paul enjoys providing commercially focussed, practical advice to people at all levels, from new graduates to boards and company directors and owners.

Qualifications

Paul has a Bachelor (Hons) History from Oxford University and a Graduate Diploma in Law from the College of Law, Chester in the United Kingdom. He was admitted to practice in Australia in 2009.

Life before Sparkes

Before joining Sparke Helmore in 2026, Paul was a Partner in a leading Australian law firm.  Prior to this, Paul spent seven years as Regional Legal Counsel for a leading construction contractor and during his time in-house was recognised as one of Australia’s leading construction and infrastructure lawyers.

Life outside of Sparkes

Paul arrived in Australia in 2007 and still wakes up thinking how lucky he is to be living in Brisbane. Paul enjoys fishing, cycling, most ball sports (now more watching than playing) and spending time enjoying life with his family and friends.
