Margaret is admitted to practice in Australia and the United States and is a member of the state bars of California and Massachusetts. She has a Bachelor of Arts from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota and a Juris Doctor from Northeastern University Law School in Boston, Massachusetts.
Life before Sparkes
Before moving to Australia, Margaret worked as a public defender and then in private practice litigating cases in state and federal courts in Massachusetts. She has tried numerous cases to jury verdicts as lead counsel. She also represented students in university misconduct matters, regularly appeared before the Massachusetts Parole Board, and was a board member of Prisoners’ Legal Services of Massachusetts. In addition to her legal practice, Margaret has worked on political campaigns across the United States and for the Letter Carriers’ union in Washington, D.C. When her older daughter started kindergarten, she volunteered and worked in schools in San Francisco and Sydney before returning to the law.
Life outside of Sparkes
Margaret enjoys travelling and exploring Sydney and is perpetually on the hunt for a bagel that tastes like home.
