About Deborah

Deborah has been fascinated by financial liability insurance products since she joined LawCover in 1996. After working in-house, Deborah now acts for professional indemnity and directors' and officers' (D&O) insurers in coverage and monitoring roles and as defence counsel when indemnity is not in issue.

What she does

Deborah typically advises on complex financial loss claims.  She has experience in representing a wide variety of professionals, from real estate agents and valuers to lawyers, and in a variety of forums.

Deborah has been acknowledged as a leading Insurance lawyer in AFR's Best Lawyers 2019.

Who she works with

Deborah advises Australian and international insurers, brokers and intermediaries, as well as professional firms with large deductibles and/or self-insurance arrangements.

Qualifications

Deborah has a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree.

Life before Sparkes

Deborah began her working life in the Northern Territory, where she had a varied practice as a solicitor for about five years. She then worked in-house for some 15 years at a variety of insurers, which offered financial lines products, and in big corporations with insurance programs that required specialist in-house management. She joined Sparke Helmore in 2010.

Life outside of Sparkes

Deborah loves to read and is regularly caught at lunch with her head stuck in a book. She claims there is no correlation between "work" reading and "real" reading and that an overabundance of the first does not preclude the second. She tortures the firm as the host of an annual charity trivia night and spends at least 11 months of every year searching for impossible questions.
