What his clients say

"Paul guided Council through a difficult and convoluted dispute with a large contractor over a variation in contract terms. The matter and outcome was critical, as there was a significant financial risk to the Council and its community. The case was ultimately resolved with the result very much in the favour of the Council. During what could otherwise have been a stressful and daunting experience, Paul's professionalism, calmness and expertise throughout the process gave the Council great comfort and confidence."

Paul Macdonald, Manager Waste & Recycling Services, Campbelltown City Council

"I wanted to thank you personally for the counsel, support and friendship extended by you and your team during the most complex project I have been involved in after 35 years in the construction industry. We always felt that your crew was part of our team and we had complete trust in the people we were dealing with."

Ian Stewart, Project Director—new Royal Adelaide Hospital, BSA Limited

"When I took over the management of Fuller-FLSmidth I inherited ongoing and latent litigation for its past business activities. These were all high stakes disputes and litigation, in relation to minerals processing projects across Australia, involving complex legal and technical issues linked to intricate and multifaceted claims of quantum.

As Managing Director, these litigation disputes held many fears for me, including dilution of management and staff effort away from business improvement and development and the fear of the uncertainty at trial. Solving these disputes within reasonable time, at reasonable cost and with limited disruption to the business was paramount to me.

Paul led several teams of legal advisors for my company in solving these disputes, all while keeping the disruption level to a minimum - solutions that included a sizeable insurance recovery.

Paul's special skill was to thoroughly prepare the company's cases on best terms in the event of a trial, but in parallel to engineer facilitated negotiations between all parties and their lawyers. He steered the events away from costly court trial or arbitration to mediation that always led to beneficial solutions. His commercial acumen and strategies to understand and deliver business objectives in the legal context set him apart from many other lawyers who in my experience focus on legal process and court outcomes."
