Nick is the Principal Adviser – Tax of Sparke Helmore Consulting (SHC), an allied service of Sparke Helmore Lawyers. Nick is an expert in all forms of taxation, including corporate & international tax, tax controversy and State taxes. Nick has extensive experience working on tax cases, disputes as well as discussions with the Australian Taxation Office and the relevant State revenue authorities.
Nick provides advice and assistance on contentious and non-contentious tax matters. He has expertise in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, tax risk management and governance, corporate reconstructions, employee shares, stamp duty, employment matters, wills and estates, and land tax. In contentious tax matters, Nick has appeared for and assists in all tax and tax related matters, including tax appeals and any matter involving a revenue authority.
Nick has been the lead tax adviser on a range of clients, including those in the financial services sector (financial products market makers, credit unions and managed funds), infrastructure, manufacturing, engineering, construction, importing, pharmaceutical research, private equity, property development, real estate investment, retirement villages and international trading.
Nick works with clients in a number of business areas, with businesses, corporate groups, high net wealth individuals and expatriates.
Nick has a Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws, both with Honours, from the University of Sydney. He is currently completing his Doctor of Philosophy in the University of NSW.
Nick was admitted as a legal practitioner in in NSW in 1994 and in England and Wales in 2001 and he was admitted to the Bar in 2012.He is also a Chartered Tax Adviser.
Nick began his career in Deloitte (then Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu), working in the Sydney and the London offices. Nick worked in law firms in London and Sydney and was also a partner in the Corporate and International Tax Practice in BDO Australia.
More recently before joining Sparke Helmore, Nick has been working as a barrister, defending clients in tax related matters or appealing tax decisions, on matters involving income tax, payroll tax, luxury car tax and other taxes. Nick has defended clients in debt collection and insolvency matters (all against the Australian Taxation Office), and has also appeared in matters involving professional indemnity claims, contractual disputes, tax audits, employment matters, child support payments and migration appeals.
Nick is a sessional lecture at the University of Technology, Sydney, University of NSW and Charles Sturt University, in taxation, finance law and corporate law.
Nick leads a full life outside with his young and active family, being heavily involved in his sons’ education and sporting lives. He has a passion for travelling, reading, writing and martial arts.
