About Mary

Mary is an experienced administrative law practitioner who specialises in Privacy Law, including identifying and assessing privacy and compliance risks.

Prior to joining Sparke Helmore’s Government-Public and Regulatory team in 2020, Mary was part of the firm’s Insurance team.

What she does

Mary brings significant experience supporting Commonwealth agencies in complying with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Government Agencies Privacy Code, including as a secondee to a number of large agencies. Her experience includes advising on and conducting investigations into privacy complaints and incidents; representing clients in matters before the Office of the Australian information Commissioner; undertaking Privacy Threshold Assessments; assisting with completing Privacy Impact Assessments; drafting privacy documentation; and developing and delivering tailored privacy training modules.

Mary is also the Local Community Coordinator for the Sparke Helmore Canberra office.

Qualifications

Mary holds a Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice from Flinders University.


Life before Sparkes

Before joining Sparke Helmore, Mary was an insurance litigation lawyer. Prior to obtaining her Bachelor of Laws, Mary held a unique dual role as a Privacy Officer/ Assistant Legislation Liaison Officer at the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science.


Life outside of Sparkes

Mary is an avid baker and a self-proclaimed Tiramisu queen. Her spare time is dedicated to her family and friends, long hikes, and the growing pile of books beside her bed. Mary wants to learn as many languages as possible and is currently trying to master her family’s Italian dialect.
