About Kent

Kent focuses on insurance law and its application in the Australian Capital Territory, particularly in the CTP, liability and professional indemnity space. He also advises ACT private sector employers, and all tiers of government, on employment issues.
What he does
Kent spent the first 13 years of his career working in an engineering role. He is skilled in determining the cause of systemic failure leading to claims, including catastrophic and fraud claims. He is known for his work in accident and crash reconstruction and destruction testing, and the briefing of engineering and related experts.

Kent advises employers on the management of employees who are unable to return to work, how to manage bullying claims and the interaction between work-related and employment law. He also defends employers in work health and safety prosecutions.
Who he works with
Kent works with national and ACT based insurers, brokers and claims management practitioners.

He also works with medium to large employers, as well as local government, ACT, NSW and Commonwealth Government employers on workplace issues.

Kent originally obtained certificate level engineering qualifications and worked in the Hunter Valley mining industry for 13 years. After qualifying as a lawyer in 1991 he worked for a two partner firm in the Hunter Valley before joining Sparke Helmore in Newcastle in 1993. In 1998 he transferred to the firm's new Canberra office where he has held the role of Local Managing Partner on two separate occasions over a 15 year period.
Life outside of Sparkes
Kent has a busy family life and a passion for building and renovating houses, playing a good round of golf and going fly fishing in alpine streams. In winter, he enjoys ski-touring the main range of the Snowy Mountains.
