Gerard is the firm's National Executive Officer and a member of the Executive Committee. His legal career spans more than 20 years and has taken him to various firms in four different countries. He has a deep understanding of firm operations through his experience as Chief Operating Officer for Allen & Gledhill and Walkers Global.
Gerard's role combines leadership, strategic, management and organisational functions. He is responsible for managing the firm's shared services teams as well as assisting the Board and management to implement the firm's strategic plan in pursuit of its aim to be a world-class independent Australian law firm, that clients value for its people and performance.
Gerard works with the firm's leadership team in developing and implementing the firm's strategy.
Gerard holds an MBA from the University of Oxford (Saïd Business School), and a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Western Australia.
Before joining Sparke Helmore, Gerard was consulting through his firm, Aularian Consulting.
Gerard's legal career began at Freehills in Perth, where he spent five years as an associate. He then moved to London and took up consulting roles at Mitchell Madison Group and Clifford Chance. From late 2004, he spent two years as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Allen & Gledhill in Singapore, before moving to the Cayman Islands to take up the COO role at Walkers Global.
In his youth, Gerard was a keen AFL footballer and switched codes to play rugby union at Oxford. Nowadays, Gerard prefers to watch his three sons play sport from the sidelines and joining them in the occasional game of backyard cricket.
