Georgina Dodd
Senior AssociateAbout Georgina
Georgina is an experienced workplace lawyer specialising in work health and safety (WHS), employee relations and coronial inquests. She helps the firm’s clients to deal with a range of risks arising from the workplace; including critical incidents, WHS compliance issues, employment disputes and regulatory investigations and prosecutions.
In 2022, Georgina was recognised as a finalist in the Lawyers Weekly ‘30 under 30 Award’ in the Work Health and Safety category.
What she does
Georgina provides pragmatic and commercial advice to clients who require assistance navigating complex and often highly sensitive, WHS and people-management enquiries.
She is often first on site in the immediate aftermath of an incident and assists clients in managing an incident from this moment through the investigation to the conclusion of a prosecution and / or coronial inquest. Georgina has been involved in the defence of many high-profile prosecutions under WHS and chain of responsibility legislation, including the Heavy Vehicle National Law. Her experience enables her to proactively advise clients in an effort to reduce their potential liability.
Who she works with
Georgina works with government (local, state and Commonwealth) and private sector clients across a range of industries including construction, infrastructure, mining, manufacturing, road transport, health, retail, utilities and insurance. She works closely with senior executives, WHS and insurance claims officers, in-house legal counsel and human resources.
Qualifications
Georgina has a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of Arts (Gender Studies) from Macquarie University and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the College of Law. While working at Sparke Helmore, Georgina also attained a Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety.
Life before Sparkes
Before joining Sparke Helmore (for the second time) in 2017, Georgina worked in Professional Standards and assisted with the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Prior to that, Georgina worked at community legal organisations including the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) in the Northern Territory and the HIV / AIDS Legal Centre and NSW Aboriginal Land Council in Sydney.
Life outside of Sparkes
Georgina is a passionate scuba diver and shark lover and takes every opportunity to get in the water, planning trips to dive sites around the world and hanging onto David Attenborough’s every word on the plane. Despite how seasick she gets (which no amount of ginger will cure), she would not miss an opportunity for a liveaboard if it means exploring remote parts of the ocean. In winter, you’ll find her on the slopes of Thredbo, pursuing an equally expensive hobby.
