Welcome to the inaugural issue of Consumer Matters—a review of the Australian Consumer Law highlights from 2018 and insights into the developments we expect to see in 2019.

In addition to an update on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s current investigations and priorities, we review a selection of consumer law decisions from the last 12 months—specifically in relation to the priority areas of misleading and deceptive conduct, unconscionable conduct, consumer guarantees and unfair contract terms— as well as some interesting cases where the Australian Consumer Law has been deployed in private claims.
