Gynaecological Oncology (GO) Fund The Spastic Centre

Through SHARE's Community Support Program, Sparke Helmore volunteers have assisted the Gynaecological Oncology (GO) Fund to dispatch more than 8,000 items of correspondence to help launch a major GO Fund initiative called 'The Karen Campaign'..

This fundraising campaign, directed to the legal profession, is named after Karen Erlich, a lawyer, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer, but who worked tirelessly to help establish the GO Fund that operates today to raise funds to support research into the prevention, early detection and treatment of gynaecological cancer.

Sparke Helmore has been recognised by the GO fund for its contribution to this worthwhile cause and we endeavour to contribute meaningfully to the campaign's activities each year.

In addition, Sparke Helmore has a long-standing relationship with The Spastic Centre, which provides a range of support services to children and adults with Cerebral Palsy, and their families.

For several years, the firm has held an annual cocktail event in Sydney for donors and supporters of The Spastic Centre, to recognise the contribution of 'The McLeod Wheel of Friends', who are friends of the Centre that have committed to make a bequest to support the Centre's activities.

Through SHARE, Sparke Helmore's active support for The Spastic Centre has been enhanced and the firm has held additional events for the Centre in both its Newcastle and Canberra offices, provided pro bono assistance for the Centre's research ethics committee, and venues for staff meetings and continuing education events.

SHARE's Community Support Program has also enabled a range of assistance to other charities and community groups, through sharing of Sparke Helmore's administrative and technological capabilities, via hosting and catering of community and fundraising events, and by creatively supporting national and local fundraising campaigns.

Some examples of the assistance provided through SHARE's Community Support Program include:

  • Assisting an advocacy centre for people with disabilities to help update their 'Services Directory'.
  • Assisting Apex to engage with its corporate supporters by holding events in Sydney and Melbourne.
  • Hosting a Pro Bono Forum in Melbourne for the Public Interest Law Clearing House (Vic).
  • Providing a venue for volunteer training to assist The Leukaemia Foundation in the Hunter region of NSW
  • Printing annual reports, pamphlets and other publications for charities and community groups
  • Sponsoring fundraising events in the community, such as the Sparke Helmore/ NBN Television Triathlon

In addition, Sparke Helmore's Community Support Program incorporates a comprehensive Workplace Giving Program, facilitating payroll donations by Partners and staff to charities of choice.

Sparke Helmore itself donates to charities and community groups and has held fundraising dinners and workplace fundraising campaigns for such charities as The Cancer Council, Sids & Kids, The Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal, The Movember Foundation, and The GO Fund.
