Summer clerksJane GallagherWhy you chose Sparkes?I chose Sparkes because it is an appealing, friendly and exciting firm with lots of personality. Sparke Helmore also has a good reputation which I was well aware of being from Newcastle. What was your clerkship high-point?The high-points of my clerkship were; developing my skills, meeting fantastic people and being sent to attend the execution of a Writ of Possession independently. It was a real hands-on experience and a great opportunity to represent the firm! What was your clerkship low point? The only low-point of the clerkship was becoming accustomed to the Sydney lifestyle. Being from Newcastle, living and working in Sydney has been a challenging but also exhausting experience! How would you describe the culture of Sparkes? The culture of Sparkes is inviting, young and hardworking. I have found the firm to be a great environment in which to learn. What was your clerkship low point?Having to walk up to court (sometimes a few times per day) in heels! The breaks in the pavement up Martin Place are not forgiving!! It is a firm that knows how to balance hard work with the interpersonal aspects of legal practice. What was your clerkship high-point?The high-point of my clerkship was attending court with my "buddy" for over a week. I had the opportunity to see a case unfold and see the amount of work that goes into preparing for a hearing. It was great to get that sort of exposure! Feeling like part of the Sparke Helmore team and the experience I have gained during the clerkship has cemented my decision to go into private practice. What was your clerkship low point?Overcoming the legal jargon and the day to day technology challenges! I also liked the focus on learning and skills development What was your clerkship high-point?The highpoint of my clerkship was making my first appearance in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. It exceeded my expectations as I did not think that "hands on exposure" would extend to me standing before a registrar in the AAT!
