About Ben

Ben leads Sparke Helmore's Banking & Finance team and manages a number of major institutional relationships in the financial services, property and funds sectors. He also works on a range of projects within our innovation hub, Bright Sparke.

What he does

As a debt adviser, Ben focuses on leveraged, property and asset finance. He advises debt providers and those raising finance on domestic and cross-border corporate and acquisition financings, across a range of industries and sectors. He also advises a number of major Australian market participants on property and asset financings, as well as corporate trustees on structured financings and capital markets transactions.

Ben often advises on competitive debt tenders, including pre-mandate documentation such as terms sheets and commitment letters.

Ben is particularly active in the mid-market space. He has expertise in bilateral, syndicated and club financings, senior and mezzanine finance (including related inter-creditor arrangements), IPO and IPO-related financings, construction and development finance, strategic debt investments, debt restructurings and recapitalisations.

Ben's lender clients include Assentinsure, Babson Capital, ICBC, Olympus Capital, Qualitas, St. George and Westpac. Borrower and sponsor clients include Centuria, CentralNic Group and Crescent Capital Partners.

Our team advised CentralNic Group, an AIM-listed internet registry service provider based out of the UK, on the Australian aspects of its global debt and equity raising, and its financing of various Australian and New Zealand acquisitions.

Qualifications
Ben has a Bachelor of Economics degree and a Diploma of Law from the University of Sydney.

He is a member of the Australian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association Limited and the Australian Direct Property Investment Association.

Ben co-wrote the Debt Finance chapter in the Australian Private Equity Handbook—a plain English reference guide with step-by-step advice on implementing private equity transactions, published by CCH in 2012.
Life before Sparkes
Before re-joining Sparke Helmore in 2011, Ben was with K&L Gates and prior to that DLA Piper and Ashurst.
Life outside of Sparkes
Ben is married with three children and surfs or ocean swims every day. When he is not in Sydney Ben can be found on the family farms on the mid north coast, where he grows organic fruit and vegetables, runs beef cattle and harvests hardwood timber.
